Nekozaki Peninsula, located on the northernmost tip of Hyogo Prefecture, looks like a crouching cat when seen from offshore. At first, it was not a peninsula but an isolated island. It was connected to the land with sand carried from Takeno River and accumulated by waves and the ocean current. Takeno Coast, with its beautiful sea water, is selected as one of the 100 best beaches in Japan.
Capes and peninsulas along Takeno Coast include not only steep cliffs and rocky stretches formed by wave erosion, but also sand beaches suitable for bathing. The mouth of the Takeno River is currently a fishing port, but was a port to wait out storms for Kitamaebune (commercial ships) during the Edo Period.
